Description from Burkes Armory...

"'Templeton. A. (azure or blue) A fesse, or (A fesse is formed by two horizontal lines drawn across the field, comprising the escutcheon. It is emblematic of the miltary girdle worn around the body or over the armour.) ("or" means gold or yellow.) In base a church ar. ("ar" means white or silver.) Crest: a holy lamb reguard ar., ("reguard" means watchful) sustaining over the shoulder a banner gu ("gu" meas red).'... Translated into english, this means: "Blue background with a gold fesse; a white or silver church in the base; a white or silver holy lamb in a watchful position, holding a red banner over the shoulder'...The surname was undoubtedly adopted by the Templeton family because of their residence near a temple, a place of worship, as was the ancient custom when surnames were first assumed." Source: L. B. Templeton's Templeton Family History, 1953, L. B. Templeton

The coat of arms of the Templeton family indicated they were deeply religous and it was, no doubt, because of the zeal and heroism of some early ancestor participating in the holy wars that the arms was awarded. A great many of these staunch crusaders embodied in their personal name, or bore on their coat of armor, some allusion or symbol proclaiming their allegiance to the christian faith."

"In 1606 two Scotish noblemen, Hugh Montgomery and James Hamilton, arranged an amnesty for the Irish rebel Con O'Neill in exchange for a third of his vast property holdings in counties Down and Antrim. They then encouraged tenants from other parts of Scotland to settle there and establish farms. James I realized this could be a useful way to pacify the Catholic Irish in the neighboring territory. In 1610 he set aside nearly half a million acrees across six counties, promising land to any setller willing to take the Oath of Supremecy (meaning they recognized James as the head of the English Church, which atuomatically excluded any Catholics). The settlers came in two great waves:first the Highlanders from the Western Isles, then Lowlanders and some English emigrants financed by merchants in London (hence the name of the town where many made thier homes, Londonderry). However, it was the Scots who predominated, and who left thier stamp on the six counties of Protestant Ulster. Today Americans call thier descendants 'Scotch-Irish', but we must consider them Scottish in every significant respect."

"Mrs. Allie Templeton of McCormick has rented the Gilkerson boarding house conducted by Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gilkerson for a long term of years and will take charge about December 1. Mrs. Templeton is an experienced boarding house keeper and will again open the dining room, which has been closed for the past year."
